Passage 1: Mary was driving to the grocery store to pick up some apples and a pie crust to bake an apple pie. She put on her seat belt and started the car. She turned on the radio and sang along to a song on the radio as she drove. As she pulled into the parking lot, she continued singing and wondered if she needed to buy milk while she was at the grocery store. She unbuckled her seat belt, picked up her purse, and got out of the car. She was sending a text message to her friend Nancy and humming along to the song that was on the radio, still wondering if she was out of milk. She closed the car door and began to walk through the parking lot. All of a sudden, Mary realized she had locked her keys in the car!
"Oh, no!" she said. "My dad is going to be so mad that I locked the keys in the car! He'll never let me drive it again."
Mary took her cell phone and called her father. He was upset, but he told Mary he would bring the extra car key to the parking lot so that she could drive home. When he arrived, he asked Mary how she had managed to leave her keys in the car.
"I was so distracted with my cell phone and the radio, I completely forgot to grab them," she said. "Next time, I promise to pay more attention so I won't forget my keys."

Passage 2: Jeff always took his dog for walks on Saturday mornings before he went to volunteer at the nursing home. He was busy putting on his Scout uniform when Rhett, his dog, started barking at the door. Jeff had spent extra time that morning getting ready because he was going to see his neighbor, Sarah, at the nursing home this afternoon. Jeff thought Sarah was very pretty and he was trying to impress her so that she would go to the movies with him next Friday afternoon. Rhett was barking so loud and Jeff knew he wouldn't have time for a long walk or he would be late for Boy Scouts.
"Just go out in the yard, Rhett. Good boy!" Jeff said. He opened the front door and let his dog out into the yard. The yard didn't have a fence and Jeff usually took his dog out on a leash. But today, since he was so concerned with impressing Sarah, he just let Rhett into the yard alone. He walked away into the kitchen to grab his bag. When he got back to the front door, he called to his dog.
"Rhett! Inside, boy!" Jeff called. "Rhett? Rhett, where are you?!"
Rhett was nowhere to be found. Jeff had no clue where his dog could be. He ran into the yard and across the street, calling to his dog. But he didn't see him anywhere....
"Hey, Jeff, is this your dog?" A girl was sitting on the sidewalk, scratching Rhett behind the ears. It was Sarah!
"Oh, uh, yeah. Thanks a lot. He just ran off, I guess. This is definitely the last time I let him outside off the leash," Jeff said, embarrassed.
"Oh, don't worry! I think he likes me. Maybe we could take him for a walk together tomorrow afternoon?" Sarah asked.
Jeff nodded. He was so excited for his plans with Sarah, and he knew he wouldn't let anything distract him from watching Rhett again.
